YDSA Endorsment of the Student Debt Cancellation Act

Today, over 45 million Americans are burdened with thousands of dollars in student loan debt. This means millions of people in the richest country in the history of the world are living under extreme financial duress for pursuing an education. As such, student debt not only punishes people for daring to be educated, but it also threatens the social and economic fabric of our country.

No American benefits from a system that individualizes the costs of bettering oneself and collectivizes the social gains of education. As democratic socialists, we fight for an alternative.

We believe that a universal, tuition-free, high-quality public education system reduces inequality, and more importantly, expands our democracy. For this reason, we were delighted when Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN) approached YDSA for an endorsement of her Student Debt Cancellation Act. The YDSA National Coordinating Committee voted unanimously to endorse the bill.

To cancel student debt and win college for all, we must build a political movement that challenges the power of predatory banks and the influence of the super-rich. This means we need every student, teacher, family and community to join us in the struggle to uphold education as a right of all people.

We urge everyone to pressure their representatives to support the Student Debt Cancellation Act, and not to take no for an answer.

The fight for College For All is a struggle for democracy in our lives as students, workers, and the broader communities we belong to; this is our struggle for socialism.

Join the movement to cancel all student debt!
